York in Poetry: York

Posted on 25 November 2012 | Poem, Audio

A city where commonplace meets unexpected
The Ouse makes a mirror where boats are reflected

Broaden your mind with the world class museums
Or search ancient graveyards for lost mausoleums

The colourful markets and quaint cobbled streets
With their many old shops overflowing with treats

It grew as a major wool trading centre
Surrounded by walls with four arches to enter

Built by the Romans who made their walls strong
Where buskers play music and crowds sing along

York is a place where the old meets the new
Puts a smile on a face with a rewarding view

There’s the Minster, the races, the Viking remains
The Uni, the tourists, the history, the trains

If you’re looking for culture, the cutting edge scene
Look no further than York, for a place you can dream
