York in Poetry: The Fifth Lamb's Play

Posted on 24 November 2012 | Audio, Poem

Being cast as the fifth lamb in a primary
school nativity play may have dissuaded
you from a life on the stage, but it also
stoked a passion for ritual theatre.

Years later, we went to York on the trail of
the Mystery Plays and all things medieval.
I would never have made a decent damsel,
you seem sad to confess over a beer in one

of the city’s many haunted pubs. I love
that you are more Gawain than Guinevere,
but can find no way to express this.
On our way back to the train station, we

detour via a gift shop, I buy you the
medieval-styled puppet show you smiled
at, along with a puppet-making kit in the
hope it might communicate something.
