York in Poetry: Stone Butterfly - St Nicholas Fields

Posted on 24 November 2012 | Poem, Audio

In the unlikely event of flight, do not panic.
Stranger things have happened:

Out of the dead grew life;
Bricks and houses,
Homes still standing,
Children’s children’s children playing.

Out of the dead grew life.
In the possible event of flight, do not panic.

Everything is under control.
Out of the poison grew flowers;
Tansy, cow parsley,
Hawthorn and lime,
Plants you don’t know,
Plants you have to look up in books.
Out of the poison grew flowers.

In the likely event of flight, do not panic.
It is why we are here.

Out of the refuse grew belief;
Power from the air,
Water fit to drink,
Eighteen species of butterfly,
Reliable eyewitnesses saw a dragon.
Out of the refuse grew belief.

In the inevitable event of flight, do not panic.
Live. Grow. Believe.
