After a brief career in banking and following National Service I came to York to St John’s Teacher Training College.  After qualifying I became a York resident, beginning my teaching career as St John’s Sec. Mod School and later became Head of English at Knavesmire Sec. Mod before taking up a post in West Yorkshire at Hemsworth HS as Head of Drama.  Having settled in York I joined York Trojans Hockey Club (which subsequently became City of York H.C.), York Railway Institute Band as a trombonist and later player in dance bands, among them JR Big Sound (with Johnny Sutton) and Derek Mackfall Band and then, in the mid 60’s became a member of City Opera Group which later became York Opera.  I am currently Chairman of York R.I. Band, President of City of York H.C., A Stage Director of Y. Opera as well as playing occasional principal roles e.g. The Learned Judge (Trial By Jury) and Jack Point (Yeoman of the Guard) whenever the group moves from its usual grand opera to stage Gilbert & Sullivan.
